Types of Cabarrus County Court Records

Cabarrus County court records come from Superior Court and District Court within the North Carolina General Court of Justice. Cabarrus County Court Records Public Access

North Carolina court-record access starts with public-record law and the Clerk's statutory duties. G.S. 132-1 defines public records broadly as materials made or received in connection with public business. G.S. 7A-109 requires clerks to maintain records, files, dockets, and indexes and, except where prohibited by law, makes those records open to public inspection during regular office hours.

Public users should first try Portal for current public case summaries, hearings, judgments, documents, and payment information. If the record is older, not online, restricted online, or needed for a background check, the Judicial Branch points users to the Clerk's office and public self-service terminals. Criminal background checks should not be based only on Portal results. Clerk terminals can search criminal case information by defendant name, case number, or victim/witness name.

Restricted Cabarrus County Court Records

Some Cabarrus County court records are not available to anonymous public users. Juvenile delinquency and undisciplined records are restricted under Chapter 7B. Abuse, neglect, and dependency records are withheld from public inspection except as allowed by court order or statute. Appeal records can connect back to Cabarrus trial-court files, but they are not a substitute for the trial case summary and Clerk file.

Cabarrus Court Records and Deeds Split

The Cabarrus County Clerk of Superior Court and the Cabarrus County Register of Deeds do not hold the same records. The Clerk handles court case files, including criminal, civil, special proceeding, estate, and divorce judgment records. The Register of Deeds handles marriage licenses, birth certificates, death certificates, marriage certificates, notary records, veteran discharges, maps, condominium plans, and land-related documents. The Clerk fallback is essential when Portal does not show the full file. The Cabarrus County Clerk of Superior Court is located at the Cabarrus County Courthouse. Regular hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

Visitors should plan for courthouse security. The Judicial Branch says courthouse security is operated by the Cabarrus County Sheriff's Department. Cell phones are not permitted. Knives of any type or size, scissors or sharp metal objects, firearms, ammunition, and mace are also prohibited. Bags, purses, briefcases, backpacks, and other items may be searched. Bring case numbers, party names, and dates in written form if that information would otherwise be stored on a phone.
